ABA Therapist Training (face-to-face)

Suitable for individuals wanting to work as ABA therapists and parents wanting to interact and communicate better with their child.

The ABA therapist’s role is to teach communication, play, self-help, and academic skills to children with autism. This course will help participants develop and acquire these skills. It also offers comprehensive guidance on how to work one-on-one with children with autism. Topics covered during this training course include

  • Understanding ASD
  • Discrete Trial Teaching
  • Reinforcement
  • Task Analysis
  • Functional Behavioural Assessment
  • Behaviour Management strategies
  • Generalisation and maintenance of behaviours

Cost: $550 ABIA Member/student; $595 non-member; $600 DSS/FaHCSIA funding

**Note: Training content and video examples are set in the home and geared towards early intervention. Skills learnt in this course can be transferred to the early educational settings.

Course Objectives:
Practical skills
On completion of this course it is expected that participants will:
 Demonstrate a discrete trial
 Demonstrate three types of prompts and prompt fading
 Perform a reinforcement assessment
 Give reinforcement contingent on a target behaviour/response
 Demonstrate varied reinforcement
 Demonstrate three basic curriculum areas (matching, NVI, receptive).
 Complete a functional analysis of behaviour
 Complete a task analysis

Theoretical Knowledge
On completion of this course it is expected that participants will:
 Label the core deficits as listed in the DSM‐IV criteria for an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
 Identify a broad definition of Applied Behaviour Analysis and it’s applications
 Define Intensive Behaviour Intervention
 Identify and define the components of a discrete trial
 Identify and define three types of prompts
 Identify and define primary and secondary reinforcement and positive and negative reinforcement.
 Identify and define discrimination training and random rotation.
 Identify and define mastery criteria, maintenance and three types of generalisation
 Identify and define at least two proactive and two reactive behaviour management plans.
 Identify and define the roles and responsibilities of the behavioural interventionist as relevant to a home‐based IBI program
